As you can see above I have highlighted the key parts of the brief.
What the brief would like us to communicate:
-It's a modern and energetic art form
-Opera is exciting and alive and a thrill to watch
-Most productions use subtitles known as surtitles where there is screen which shows the translation even if the Opera is in english.
(All shows at the Royal Opera House use surtitles)
-There are a range of subjects and stories in which everyone can relate to which means in can relate to everyone.
Reasons why 20-30 year olds would not come
-They may think it is to expensive.
-They could think it is just for high class people.
- Not knowing what Opera actually is.
-Think it is just a stage with a fat lady singing.
-Not knowing where Opera's actually are.
-They may think it is for old people.
-They may think they would not be able to understand it.
My client is The Royal Opera House
After reading the brief these are a few ideas that came to my head and I just wrote down.
The social element
Social behaviours change and also the patterns that
consist within that.
Social impact
Opera singing to young people who are stressed on the
train/bus.
They are just like us there’s nothing different.
Don’t sell them opera
just change their opinion on it.
Human emotions
Its immersive you get an experience you cant get.
Young people train for opera
People use it for motivation an anxiety
Not only to sing it but to but to experience it
It should be everybody
PRICE?

David Hockney: Designing for Oprah
So what actually is Opera?
The definition by Google is that it is,
"A dramatic work in one or more acts, set to music for singers and instrumentals"
Simply put an opera is just like a play except all of the words are sung.
Opera is sung in many different languages but the most common are, italian, german, french and english. What many people do not know is that generally most operas have surtitles now.
As you can see in the images below these are examples of surtitles:
Definition by Google:
"Surtitles, also known as supertitles, are translated or transcribed lyrics/dialogue projected above a stage or displayed on a screen, commonly used in opera or other musical performances."
As an example when looking at the Royal Opera House they use surtitles for all of their shows even the ones in english making it easy to understand for everyone.
Quote below is from:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera
"In traditional opera, singers do two types of singing: recitative, a speech-inflected style[2] and arias, a more melodic style. Opera incorporates many of the elements of spoken theatre, such as acting, scenery, and costumes and sometimes includes dance. The performance is typically given in an opera house, accompanied by an orchestra or smaller musical ensemble, which since the early 1800s has been led by a conductor."
Opera started in Italy towards the end of the 16th century, and then soon spread through the most of europe.
"Royal Opera House: What do you see?"
When looking at the additional information in the brief I saw that there was a video on YouTube called, "The Royal Opera House: What do you see?".
The video starts of by showing us what an empty opera stage and asking us what do we see but then as the video goes on we see more and more of what opera actually is and how much more it is than just someone singing on stage.
These are important quotes below, from the video above which I think will help me get a better idea of how big opera is than just someone singing.
"What do you see glitz and glamour"
"art for the elite"
"expensive seats"
"what happens here comes from sweat and tears"
and talent and ambition
from energy and vision"
"This is creativity that goes beyond the city"
"This is art for the nation"
"This is more than just a stage this is dramatic prowess"
"stirring the soul for both young and old"
"Ignites passion and provokes debate"
"sparks imagination"
"Inspires creation"
"Now look again and tell me what you see"
Summary of this video for me is that opera is more than just a stage.
Screenshots from the video:
I have put these specific screen shots in because when you see the first screenshot which is from the beginning of the video you see it as a place where there are expensive seats and what you think is just for the elite. Then the video goes through important key parts where we see the hard work and dedication which goes in to it and that it is not just people singing but it is somewhere where theres sometimes dance involved and even acting. We all see young and old people in the video which tells us this is not just for young people as well. I feel these are key parts of the video which tell us that opera is more than just a stage with someone singing on it.
As you can see in the screenshots below which are taken from:
(http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/may/09/inside-opera-live-why-opera-matters-uk-opera-chiefs#img-2) you can clearly see that opera is more than just singing but also involves acting and sometimes dance to.
---
The Guardian article I saw
Also if you look at the quote in the screenshot which I highlighted which is, "Opera can make us see, feel and hear the world differently"I like how Opera helps you use your senses.
Quotes from the website which I think are important:
"Why is opera important? Why is any art important? It offers us a reflection of who we are, how we relate to others, and what it means, collectively and individually, to be human."
The quotes below are from the Guardian:
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/may/09/inside-opera-live-why-opera-matters-uk-opera-chiefs
"Opera performed live is a uniquely thrilling experience – at its best, it is hugely powerful and the most emotionally direct of all art forms. The combination of dramatic narrative, stagecraft and music, and especially the range and vulnerability of the human voice, make opera the art form that comes closest to expressing pure emotion. It is storytelling at its most vivid and manipulative.Opera seeps into popular consciousness and bleeds into other forms, sound-tracking TV shows, sports anthems, adverts and films – where its music is often used as a shortcut to create a heightened emotional tension at climactic moments. Those big moments in opera are usually the ones that deal most directly in the big human themes: life, love, death, loss, passion, joy, anger – but opera can be subtle as well as showy."
"Kasper Holten, director of opera, Royal Opera House
When I meet people who say they don’t like opera, it turns out nine out of 10 haven’t ever actually seen one. "Isn’t opera where they sing 'I love you, I love you, I love you' or 'I am dying, I am dying, I die now' – and it takes them 10 minutes to do so?" I get asked. To express something about love or death in 10 minutes is fast! These are emotions we struggle with our whole lives. In opera we spend time on what matters in life: the big emotional peaks and abysses. Opera is the world’s first multimedia. Through the combination of music and theatre, we can identify with characters, but then – when they feel love, despair, loneliness, fear, hope, jealousy – stop time and explore these moments further through music and movement, finding a language for the emotions it can be difficult to talk about, although they define our lives. Opera can make us see, feel and hear the world differently, and remind us about being in touch with the things beneath the surface, the things that really matter."
In the quote above Kasper Holten who is the director of opera at the Royal Opera House says, "When I meet people who say they don’t like opera, it turns out nine out of 10 haven’t ever actually seen one"-----
Science of opera
I then watched a video where it was talking about the science of opera. This was done by connecting two men to all sorts of gadgets and digital machinery that measured various parts of their autonomic systems with them watching a opera show.
Following statistics below are from the video from a neurologist.
Different responses in different arts.
90% of people will admit they have cried in front of an audience.
5% to 10% cried in front of a painting or statue
60% have cried to a poem.
Something I learnt from their experience of opera is that Alan Davis said, lots of people were in their seat early and they were reading the synopsis in the programmes so they know whats going come, so you know all the story before you start and then you just enjoy how they are doing it.
Them watching the production got their heart beats to start to synchronies with each other.
Screenshot below is from the same video above
She talks about how she cant help but feel these emotions because they are actually traveling through her. She also says she's about to die on stage in about 3 hours. She also talks about how her heart rate wants to go high but she has to stay calm and deep breathily so she can sing well.
They ask her do you feel the emotions of your character or are you really busy on thinking about what your next que is. She says that it depends on if she has a new role then she is thinking of what her technique is but if she knows what her role is she even sometimes cries.
From the video above I realised how much opera can engage you and change your emotions. And that most operas relate to every day things.
The benefits of sleep music
Quote below is from:
http://nobullying.com/sleep-music/
- "Classical Music – If there is one thing that is guaranteed to put you to sleep when you’re tired, it is classical music.
You will find that the soft notes and the brilliant highs of the music will help to take you on the musical journey that the composer went on when he wrote it, and it will be a great type of music to sleep.
The problem with classical music is that those same highs can keep you up when you’re trying to sleep, so you may want to find good classical music that doesn’t have such a powerful crescendo.
Imagine trying to sleep and listening to Mozart’s Hallelujah, and you can see yourself bolting upright when the powerful crescendo kicks in. It’s best to listen to classical music if you’re sleepy, as it may not be what you need to help you deal with insomnia problems."

Flash mobs
Opera is even used in flash mobs as you can see in the videos below. In my opinion this is a great way to grab peoples attention and attract them to opera to get an idea of what it really is and sounds like live. But in the videos you don't really see a way it targets 20 to 30 year olds to the max. This might be because of the chosen locations for flash mobs. On the other hand I see a flashmob which was specifically designed for 20-30 year olds to hear a great idea. As it will give them a small experience of an opera show since not many people actually know what opera is and how it is live as well.

Where we see Opera
Opera is recognised to most people as a high class and expensive thing to go to and something for only for the elite. A reason for this could be because of the places opera is also shown such as in high end shopping centres. Such as harrods, which is another reason why most people could think that opera is just for rich people and not many people can afford it and go to a show.
Screenshot below of woman singing opera next to the escalators in harrods.
The company that sent the lady to sing there is from the screenshot below:
As you can see they also send them to fancy restaurants and expensive clothing areas.
Opera advertising
After getting some second hand research in to opera, I decided to do some first hand research of my own.
First hand research
-Go to the royal Oprah house
-Get people to listen to opera and see how they feel
(Do it for 8 people who can listen to it and then they talk
2 minutes on how they felt after listening to Oprah)
-Go get leaflets

This was very interesting to me because it made me feel like the whole ideology of opera that people were brought up with were stuck on them and they did not want to go just because of the whole idea that it was an opera show. On the other hand there were people who said yes.
IDEAS

For this idea when trying to go take the pictures it was really hard because I was only able to do it in my university lecture room because no where else would allow us to use the cinema for 20 minutes or the opera theatre. When telling my friends to dress in specific ways it was not very easy to do because not all of them had the right clothes and they also kept laughing so I had a problem, when trying to take the pictures. Overall this idea was a failure and is not possible unless I have professional actors/models to act the different ways I want them to act in the pictures.
These are a few images of the day of the shoot going wrong.

For this idea I wanted to take pictures of two of my friends faces as it would be a lot easier to do son and then try to use them to show the different emotions you would get when you go watch an opera show.
After getting all the pictures I wanted to show the impact one would get when they watch an opera show by putting their faces together, from a normal bored face to a different emotion. By doing this I wanted to spilt their faces. But first I tried a few with different images on google to see what it would look like.
Experimenting with imagery online and layout.
The layout was done and followed by the brand rules.
Working on layout on indesign and trying to make it work with the brand rules.
Slogan for poster idea
(Half face IMAGES HERE)
The whole concept from the idea above is that you would see an object that has to do with opera and then see something completely random like a printer or banana to show people wont know what is going since they think there is no subtitles. The slogan was suppose to explain it all like a subtitle which is why it says, "Dont worry ill explain"
Due to the amount of time we had I was not able to make this idea completely work as many people found it confusing and did not really understand what I was trying to do thats why I changed the idea again.
I then decided to do a bit more research in to contemporary opera posters because I felt that I was stuck and my idea was hard to visualise in a poster so I tried to think of something else to do.
When looking at the posters above I feel like imagery is definitely something a poster needs in order to grab its audience. The posters above all seem to tell a narrative which is what I have understood from opera which is opera can tell any story and you can expect anything.
I then started looking at more collage type posters
Also looked at V&A posters which gave me an idea on perspective which engaged me and made me think more in depth of what I can do for my final.
I really like the poster above because I am personally a fan of collages just because they always seem to grab my attention and you can play with composition and come up with forms to create narratives. This is really a good idea because what I want to show people that in an opera show you can expect anything.
The three posters from Size Zero is definitely more eye catching than any other poster I have seen so far. This is because you see things on humans heads such as a ducks head or kettle which you would not expect to ever see. Also seeing these posters and than relating it to opera gives you more of a sense that opera is not just someone singing but could also be a play.
The posters above really gave me a new idea to work on. After looking at the posters at first glance the first thing which came in to mind when looking at some of them for example the skull or the ladies right after that, them posters did not say opera to me at first sight but were very aesthetically pleasing in my eyes and grabbed my attention and engaged me to find out more about the poster by reading the rest of the stuff that was on them. Then the idea of getting 20-30 years old to come watch opera came to my head.
New Idea
After looking at the following contemporary posters above I got an idea which came to mind after looking at them. When looking at the posters above the first thing which came in to mind was not opera because I saw all these weird abstract looking things that I did not know could relate at first sight. Which got me to be more engaged in to them since I am not a huge opera fan. My idea was to basically try and trick people in to looking at for example the posters and not think its opera at first sight and try make them figure out what is on the page. What is going to be on the page will be something abstract which would relate to opera but would be different objects you would see at an opera attached together. This would engage and definitely encourage 20-30 year olds gigg in my target market to look at it because it also says that the target market would have to attends, plays and exhibitions and this is something that my target audience would definitely want to see because they all consist of weird abstract looking things that you would also see for example in these places because they are all places for visually cultured people who like looking at things like this.
Since I had already created my layout because of trying to make the previous idea work I decided to first work on the abstract things to put in the poster. To do this I thought of different random objects which you might see at an opera by them being a prop or them even relating to the story by the emotion you get from it.
The random objects I decided to pick for my first poster were:
Arrow
Peacock feathers
Spring
Inside vintage clock
All these objects could be used as props in an opera or part of a set design or costume related or even time related. As you can see it brings different elements of opera together and could even tell a story.
The reason I decided to pick these was because when drawing the idea for some reason they came to mind and looked like it could look very aesthetically pleasing. The objects I picked when put together could get the viewer who is looking at the poster to try figure out what the story is of the objects together or why they have even been placed there which creates a story in their mind.

I then put the designs on different posters on indesign and tried to place them in a good location. The reason I decided not to put a background colour on the posters was because I wanted to work with white space as I thought it would make the designs less catchy and not create such a big impact of people wanting to daze in and see or figure out what is going on.

My digital idea would basically be the objects in the posters coming together. And social awareness would be pop ups you would see on Facebook which would get you to look at them more in depth to see what they look like.
After creating my posters and putting them also in different environments it was time to do my social media aspect of my campaign and my digital billboard aspect of my campaign.
Social media part of campaign
For my social media I thought of something very simple which I thought would work very well with what I am doing. The idea I decided to go with was the snap chat idea as you can see in my scanned sketchbook ideas above.
I thought this would be a great because people aged 20-30 love using snaps and filters and sending them to one another. Also I feel the idea works very well as it is consistent with everything else and is still using collages.

Digital part of campaign
The digital billboard idea is what I decided to go with. The reason being is because it still had the tricking effect on people where they don't know it is about opera first but then they realise it is. So with this digital billboard I decided to carry this same concept and make it interactive also because people aged between 20-30 would definitely mess around with one if they were next to one. Also each collage a person makes can tell its own story which goes well with my slogan which is, "Expect Anything."
So the idea is that people can create collages and once they press "DONE" there collage turn in to a royal opera poster where it would say expect anything as the slogan and people can then either scan there QR code and upload there poster to have a chance to win opera tickets or they can just press skip and it will go back to the page where you can just create a collage again.
Some examples of objects which can be used to create a collage with the digital billboard:
Chair
Tree
Leg of animal
Head of animal
Screw
Rope
Feathers
Bag
Shoes
Butterfly
Glasses
Laces
Old style suit cause
Ring
Boa tie
Tie
Scarf
Book
Animal eyes
Zipper
Buttons on coat
But to be honest you could pretty much use any object.

(Below is an example of someone who made a collage by using a butterfly and bow tie)
After creating the billboard above I realised that my QR code was way to big and that it had to be shrunk down in order for my billboard to look realistic and to also make it easier for the public to be able to get a picture from it without having to walk far away from it to make the QR code fit on their screen.
Another thing I thought about doing was making the above billboards look more realistic by adding a person actually there.
I have not yet decided if I'm going to keep these ideas as I don't know if it works that well with the person there and it is clear but I will decide in my final outcome once I show it to different people and my tutors to get a range of opinions to see which is better and more aesthetically pleasing.
There will probably be minor changes in my final outcomes just to make everything more aesthetically pleasing and to make everything work better.
Conclusion
Overall I feel like this project was very difficult and in the time we had and it was hard for me to experiment more and more in this time span. But I did find the project very interesting and learnt a lot in the process. Overall I feel like my final idea works and has a good aesthetic to it and from leaving it on a table and seeing different people walk passed that are aged 20-30 they all walk passed it and take a look a good look at it and even ask questions to me about the opera. From this I feel I have answered the brief and have encouraged people to be more interested in to opera and hopefully get them to go there for the first time.
